POINT OF INTEREST
Castello Silvestri
Around the year 1000, construction began on the fortified building, which in 1035 belonged to the Bishops Counts of Cremona.
In 1202, the fief was granted to the Sommi Family, who contributed fortification works such as crenelated towers.
In 1364, the Bishop of Cremona ceded the castle to Gabriolo Aliprandi, who sold it in 1366 to Beatrice della Scala, wife of Barnabò Visconti.
Due to their position on the border between the Venetian Republic and the Duchy of Milan, Calcio, the Castle and the surrounding lands were occupied in succession by opposing armies.
From the 15th to 17th century, the vicissitudes of the castle followed one after the other, alternating between fortifications and renovations.
In 1380, the property passed to the Secco brothers of Caravaggio, who fortified and embellished it before making it their home. Their descendants lived here until 1860, when the property passed to the Silvestri family from Sovere. In 1870, a mosaic floor dating back to the 2nd century AD was discovered in the castle cellars. Its extraordinary workmanship renders this the best example of Roman art in the entire province. Today, it can be viewed in the Archaeological Museum of Bergamo.
During the First and Second World Wars, the castle served as a military hospital.
In 1956, the Castello became private property and is today a prestigious venue for events and receptions.
The building has a dual structure. The part facing west recalls the austerity of a fortified building. Then, to the east, the transformations carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries suggest a stately country residence, including a garden with greenhouses and a fountain. The elevations on the inner courtyard have windows surrounded by polychrome frescoes. The Castle is then surrounded by a park with tall trees.
The building is structured around a courtyard, with the moat, drawbridge and corner towers featuring castle motifs. The oldest parts date back to the 16th century, such as the U-shaped main body to the left of the main entrance, which features a portico with arches on columns, running along two sides, with different depths and large frescoed rooms with lunetted vaults on the ground floor. To the right of the main entrance is an L-shaped body with an arched portico on brick pillars and a lower structure adorned with coats of arms that closes the circle of buildings at an angle.
There is a large walk-through veranda, flanked by rooms with coffered ceilings, painted friezes and fireplace from the 18th century. All bears witness to the transformations that took place between the 16th and 19th centuries, when the complex took on its current appearance. Then in the basement are vaulted cellars.
