POINT OF INTEREST

Palazzo Gallavresi

Palazzo Gallavresi is the seat of the Municipality of Caravaggio. Built in the 13th century, it was the noble residence of a branch of the Sforza family of Milan and the centre of power of the Marquisate of Caravaggio from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. It later changed hands until coming into the possession of the Gallavresi family, from whom comes its name. In the 1930s, the Palazzo Gallavresi was purchased by the municipal administration to become the Town Hall. Constant changes in ownership have profoundly altered its structure, interiors, furnishings and the general appearance of the building.

Since 1967, Palazzo Gallavresi has housed the Pinacoteca Civica, a collection of works dating from the late 15th to the 20th century that counts altarpieces, portraits, frescoes, drawings, bronze plaques and busts.

During the period of Sforza rule, the family of Michelangelo Merisi, who was linked to the Marquises by business relations, may have lived in the Palazzo.
